What about dashcams? Are they allowed?
Yes, and we recommend them for safety. However, you must notify passengers they are being recorded (usually via a sticker on the window) to comply with privacy laws.
Can I use a rental car?
Only if your name is on the insurance and the rental agency explicitly authorizes "Commercial/Rideshare" use. Most standard rentals (Hertz/Enterprise) do not allow this.
Do I need a Spinr decal/sticker?
Yes. Local bylaws in Regina and Saskatoon require you to display the Spinr "trade dress" (logo) on your front and/or rear windshield while online. We will mail this to you after approval.
My car has a cracked windshield. Can I drive?
No. A cracked windshield in the driver’s line of sight will fail the SGI inspection. It must be repaired before you can go online.
Can I drive a coupe or a truck?
You must have 4 independently opening doors and 5 working seatbelts. Extended cab trucks might be allowed if they have 4 full doors, but small coupes are not accepted.
Do I need to tell SGI I am a rideshare driver?
Yes. Once approved, SGI requires a "Rideshare Indicator" on your vehicle registration. Spinr will often notify SGI of your affiliation, but you should confirm your registration status allows for "Vehicle for Hire" use.
Do I need special insurance?
You need your basic SGI plate insurance. When you are logged in and on a trip, Spinr provides a blanket commercial liability policy (usually $1M or $2M coverage) that covers you and the passenger.
How often do I need to inspect my car?
You must upload a new inspection certificate every 12 months (1 year).
What is an SGI Light Vehicle Inspection (LV)?
This is a mandatory mechanical safety check required by Saskatchewan law for all rideshare vehicles. You can get this done at any certified mechanic (Canadian Tire, local auto shops). It costs approximately $50-$70.
What is the vehicle age limit for Spinr?
Your vehicle must be 9 years old or newer (e.g., for 2024, the vehicle must be a 2015 model or later). This is strictly enforced to ensure safety and comfort.
Is there an age limit for drivers?
You must be at least 21 years old (to ensure the 2-year driving history requirement is met).
How long does the approval process take?
Once you upload your documents, our team reviews them within 24-48 hours. If your VSC and Abstract are ready, you can be on the road in under 2 days subject to approval from SGI.
I already drive for Uber/Lyft. Can I use the same documents?

You must have a "Satisfactory Driver History," which generally means fewer than 12 points under the Driver Improvement Program in the last 2 years. DUI convictions in the last 10 years will result in immediate rejection.

Does Spinr accept drivers with a probationary license?
No. We cannot accept drivers in the GDL (Graduated Driver Licensing) program. You must have a full Class 5 license.
Do I need a special "Commercial" or "Class 4" license?
No. In Saskatchewan, rideshare drivers can operate with a standard Class 5 license, provided you are not a "Novice" driver. However, we encourage drivers to upgrade to Class 4 for additional professional benefits, but it is not mandatory to start.
